It is not an very long novel. However it reportedly took Carson McCullers five years to finish it. The effort really shows. It seems to be almost perfectly written.
As other reviewers have noted, this is not an "action novel". It is a slow moving sojourn. I can understand why||Each scene is alive with the small pungent details that turn myths back into lives. -- Margo Jefferson
